TOCCOA – Norman Richard Phillips, 74, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the Stephens County Hospital.
Born on September 18, 1934, in Oconee County, S.C., having spent most of his life in Stephens County, he was the son of Jonas Bernice and Edna McDonald Phillips. He was a member of Old Liberty Baptist Church and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army. He was retired from Southern Railway with 18 years of service. Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by a brother, J.B. Phillips; and sister, Dorothy Williams. He loved fishing, sharing the fish with his neighbors and friends, raising chickens, spending time with his family, going to church and fellowship with friends.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Norris Phillips, Toccoa; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Keith Chambers, Toccoa, and Patricia and Tim Edge, Eastanollee; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Vivian Norris and Randall and Karen Ellard, all of Toccoa, and Steve and Jan Phillips, Alto; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Frances Wirtz, Westminester, S.C., Nadene Flemming, Greenville, S.C., Betty Graham, Seattle, Wash., Ruby Florence, Stockbridge, and Joyce Stockton, Laurens, S.C.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 13, at Old Liberty Baptist Church with the Revs. Reginald Pressley, Danny Long and Ted Ansley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Cameron Edge, Casey Chambers, Jeremy Norris, William Pitts, Josh Stockton and Brian Phillips.
The Acree-Davis Funeral Home, Toccoa, was in charge of arrangements.
