Dear Editor:
Another Relay For Life in Banks County has come and gone, but this year's event is not one to be forgotten. On Friday night, May 15, the Banks County community come together with a common goal - to find a cure for cancer. With a new home at the Banks County High School stadium, hundreds of your friends and family members came out to support the event. And guess what? We're one step closer to a cure.
Letter to the Editor: Thanks for help with Relay For Life
So far, our Relay For Life has raised more than $30,050 in 2009 and our total continues to rise. Our generous community has helped us to get to this point - this includes our corporate sponsors: Wal-mart, Georgia Power, Pritchett Tire, Tanger Outlets, C&C Electrical Contractors, Commerce Country Cafe', Mackie Etris, Super Duct, Windstream and Bo Garrison. We are so grateful for the generosity of this dedicated group of businesses. Corporate sponsors underwrite much of our event costs so that more of our teams' hard-earned fundraising dollars can go toward fighting cancer.
Teams are the reason that our Relay is so successful. Lead by hardworking team captains, these groups of family, friends, coworkers and neighbors fundraise all year long to raise money for our event. Please join me in congratulating the following team and team captains on a successful time of fundraising:
•The Eliminators, Andrew Wiley = $1,173.16.
•Glory Baptist Church, Charlotte Maxwell = $3,126.42.
•Banks County Primary School, Gwen Gary and Helen Riddle = $5,996.17.
•Friends Saving Friends, Mary Ann Carlan = $2,544.70.
•Regions Bank, Casey Vanderburg = $329.76.
•Movers & Shakers, Natasha Hoard and Heather Martin = $850.
•Silver Shoals Baptist Church, Mike and Wilene Boyle = $1,573.
•The Castaways, Anita Bonds = $1,441.25.
•First Georgia Banking Company, Elizabeth Church = $943.04.
•Homer United Methodist Church, Paige Boomer = $1,404.46.
•The GAP Outlet, Christy Campbell = $1,850.
•Document Destruction, Stacey David and Sally Hensley = $556.96.
•Banks County Elementary School Nutrition Department, Denise Dodd = $4,754.85.
•PEACE, Lisa Hartness = $1,456.11.
•Nicky's Smile (Gillsville Baptist Church), Sandra Matheny = $828.
•Banks County High School HOSA, Tiffany Lacey = $309.09.
•Banks County Elementary School = $283.24.
All of our teams and captains have worked hard since September to reach these goals - be sure to say thank you and congratulations next time you see any of these great people! There is another group of very special people that I want to thank. A group of people, without whom, this event would not take place. They work hard all year long to put the event together. This is the committee. All of my thanks go to: Natasha Hoard – Chair; Elizabeth Church - Accounting Chair; Billy Whitlock - Luminaria Chair; Heather Martin - School Coordinator; Joan Cochran and Charlotte Maxwell - Survivor Co-Chairs; Anita Bonds - Entertainment Chair; and Mackie Etris - Logistics Chair.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention a several others who made this event extraordinary. First and foremost, to the Banks County School System, we give our biggest thanks, especially to Mr. Art Wheaton and the men and women at Banks County High School. Mr Wheaton and his staff were the most gracious of hosts as we invaded the school grounds for Relay. Also, to Tom Nicholson and the rest of the grounds, maintenance and facilities crew, thank you for your help! They helped us with logistics and provided brute strength for which we are grateful.
Also, to the Banks County Fire and EMS, especially Captain Brian Eubanks and Fire Chief Jeff Taylor for lending us members of their staff for the evening.
To Mr. Tyler Scroggs of the Banks County Sheriff’s Office for providing security for the evening and for helping us clean up into the early morning hours and to Mr. Darrell Crane for arranging this.
To all of the men who helped with setting up, Kenneth Cochran, Bosie Griffith, the committee and others, too many to name, thank you for your muscles and good attitudes! Thank you to Thomas West and the Two West band for providing our sound equipment for Relay and for all of our entertainers for the evening. To Mr. Thomas Gary for being a great Master of Ceremonies. Windstream, thank you for the use of the generators. Thanks to the restaurants in Homer and Banks Crossing who provided refreshments for our survivors. Last but not least, thanks to the Banks County News for their support with the publicity of our event.
Relay For Life is not just a fun community event that we hold annually to bring the community together. It's so much more than that. It's an event that saves lives. In fact, we are saving 90 lives from cancer every day because of the money raised through Relay For Life to fund research, education, advocacy and service programs. What an accomplishment! You are a part of this. By supporting Relay For Life you are helping millions of people, in communities around the world celebrate life, remember those we have lost and fight back against a disease that has taken too many. On behalf of the American Cancer Society South Atlantic Division, thank you for your contributions and support of our Relay. With you, this would not be possible. At the American Cancer Society we save lives and create more birthdays by helping you stay well, helping you get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. You're part of one of the great causes of our time and you are helping to save lives. I hope you remember how special a simple thing like a birthday can be. It's a celebration of life, a marker of progress. Thank you for helping us work tirelessly toward our goal: a world with more birthdays.
