Qualifying is under way this week for two new seats on the Banks County Board of Commission and seven candidates have qualified so far. The election will be Nov. 3.
In Post 2, which includes Baldwin, Hollingsworth, Columbia, Berlin and Washington, four candidates have qualified so far: Fred Wendt, Ray Holcomb, Neal Pulliam and Ernest Rogers.
In Post 4, which covers the Homer and Anderson districts, Robin Trotter, Charles Turk and Jerry Loftice have qualified so far.
Qualifying will end at noon on Friday of this week. Qualifying is handled at the probate judge’s office at the courthouse in Homer.
Two new commissioners will be elected on Nov. 3 expanding the Banks County Board of Commission to five members. If a run-off is necessary, it will be held on Dec. 1.
Last year, Banks County voters overwhelmingly supported expanding the three-member board to five members. Some 69 percent of the voters, or 4,070 people, voted in favor of the change, while 1,869 voted against it.
The change to local government will result in the following:
•Banks County will be divided into four commission districts. Each of these districts must be represented by one of the four part-time commissioners, who must also reside in their respective district.
•The chairman may reside in any district, representing the county as a whole.
•All of the commissioners will be elected by a county-wide vote of all eligible voters.
Thereafter, these two new commissioners and the chairman will be elected every four years together in the same year and the other two will be elected every four years in the same two year off-cycle that is currently used.
1) Does this mean that the two current county commissioners represent and reside in Post 1 and 3, or, is this requirement waived until 2011?
2) Will the Nov. 2009 election be held only in Post 2 and Post 4, or in all posts with all county voters participating?
Are you the same Charles Turk that was one of the experienced "officers" with the Banks County Volunteer Fire Department? If so, why exactly are you running for a county comission seat NOW? In Light of the letter published in last week's paper, are you a further part of the regime to press forth personal agendas? I know you heavily contributed to and publicized the Dalton effort. We saw one of the first acts of Dalton was to reverse the improvements in the Fire Department because of personal agenda and vendictivness. How are we to be assured you are not in cohorts with Dalton to achieve majority and personal agendas within the county? Why are the same people that contributed to and publicized the Dalton effort supporting you, mainly being former volunteers that left with you? Finally, WHY DID YOU ABANDON YOUR COMMUNITY WHEN YOUR TOES GOT STEPPED ON, THE SAME COMMUNITY YOU STATED NEEDED YOU SO BAD? HOW CAN WE TRUST YOU, MR. TURK, AS A COMMISIONER WHEN LAST TIME YOU DIDN'T GET YOUR WAY YOU THREW YOUR HANDS UP, TUCKED YOUR TAIL, AND RAN?
