Two Cornelia residents were arrested in Banks County on Friday morning and charged with reckless conduct charges after leaving their children in a shopping cart so they could shop.
Banks County Sheriff Charles Chapman said deputies were called to the Wal-Mart, Highway 441, Commerce, early Friday morning after two children were left alone in the electronic section of the store.
Elias Esmeraida, 31, and Mario Garrido Navarro, 35, both of 370 Wood Street, Cornelia, face reckless conduct charges following the incident.
One of the children was a nine-year-old boy and the other a nine-month-old baby.
“Both children had been placed in a shopping cart and left there by the parents so they could shop,” Chapman said.
When the children were found both of them were crying, Chapman added.
Chapman advised the store was very crowded at the time the children were found.
“After deputies arrived, it took some time to locate the children’s parents,” Chapman said.
The children were turned over to another family member and the parents were arrested and transported to the Banks County jail. Both parents were release on bond later on Friday.
