An energy plant that operates poultry-litter fueled power plants is considering locating in Banks County. The Banks County Board of Commissioners and the Banks County Development Authority jointly announced Wednesday morning that Fibrowatt, LLC has chosen Banks County as a finalist for location of a carbon neutral renewable energy power plant.
Fibrowatt LLC is owned by Homeland Renewable Energy of Pennsylvania. Fibrominn, the nation’s first plant of this kind, opened in Benson, Minnesota, in 2007, and it was a $200 million project which provided 100 jobs to the community.
Banks County officials and staff visited the Benson facility last week to observe the operations and meet with Benson town officials regarding the economic impact the industry has had on the local community. Fibrowatt will be choosing a location within the coming months and public information meetings will be held.
According to the company website, Fibrowatt is actively working on projects in Arkansas, Georgia, Maryland, Alabama, Mississippi, and North Carolina. Future projects are planned for Alabama, Texas and other states.
The company first developed three plants in the United Kingdom in the 1990s. Those plants were the world’s first three poultry litter fueled power plants. According to company officials, over the past 15 years, these plants have turned more than seven million tons of poultry litter and other biomass into enough electricity to serve 150,000 homes.
