This all started in the 1880s with two men collecting alligators they found on Anastasia Island. Today, it’s has turned into a collection of rare and exotic birds, mammals and reptiles, including every species of crocodilian in residence.
The Alligator Farm became a well-known Florida attraction in that time and today people are still flocking in to see these fascinating creatures. We got there just in time to watch the alligator feeding show. We saw guests of all ages as they gasped in amazement as the alligators lunged for their food. Throughout the day, the park offers shows about alligators, snakes, Florida’s forest friends, and the rainforest. What a way to start our day!
Our next stop, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, led us to a breathtaking view of the city, the beaches, and the harbor. We had admired the lighthouse from many places in the city and it is a beautiful site, but the real beauty is from the top. We climbed the 219 steps and found one spectacular view! It’s worth the walk, I promise. Be sure and spend some time at the museum as well. Here’s where you’ll discover St. Augustine’s maritime past and learn about life at the lighthouse. The lighthouse and museum are located just across the street from the Alligator Farm, so I’d recommend talking in both of these sites on the same day.
Back in town, we stopped by the original Ripley’s Believe it or Not? And yes, sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. It all started with Robert Ripley’s cartoon. He became a world traveler seeking stories of the bizarre and unusual. St. Augustine’s museum contains many objects from his personal collection. So it you are interested in seeing a replica of a six legged cow, a lock of John F. Kennedy’s hair, the world’s largest moving erector model of a Ferris wheel, or many things that will stretch your imagination, this is a great exhibit for you. On site, visitors can also see the reproduction of the famous “David” statue. It was carved from the same quarry and to the exact specifications as the original.
Next we toured Potter’s Wax Museum. We walked in and almost bumped into Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but it didn’t end there. We were up close and personal with the characters of Seinfeld, Michael Jackson and a host of United States presidents. Wow! Here’s where history meets Hollywood and taking in all the life-like characters was fascinating.
After dinner we decided to climb aboard the Victory III for a relaxing sunset cruise. We enjoyed a unique view of historic St. Augustine while taking in nature as well. There’s something about watching the dolphins gracefully swimming across the ocean. On this particular cruise, we had several opportunities to watch the dolphins, but our captain was sure we had a chance to get a glimpse of several manatees too. I believe watching those animals, coupled with the sunset view, made this the perfect way to end a day in St. Augustine.
We cruised by the Castillo de San Marcos, Bridge of Lions, and the Menendez Landing Site along the way. The landing site is home to one of the tallest and most picturesque crosses I’ve ever seen in my life. All I can say about this cruise---the ambiance was unforgettable! So take you camera and head out on a Victory III cruise.
GETTING AROUND TOWN
Whether we toured the historic sites in town or headed out to the beaches, we road Old Town Trolley Tours. We were able to sit back and relax as the conductors shared the history, attractions, and sights of the town. The one hour tour features 22 stops where guests can get on and off to shop, dine or sightsee. Conductors cover 100 points of interest on the tour and our ticket was good for three days. When we decided to go to the beach, the conductor took us to a bus which offered several stops along the way. Old Town Trolley is definitely the way to go. We didn’t have to worry about traffic or driving; we just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
