Future of Local Family Connection unknown

The fate of the Banks County Family Connection Collaborative Networking Group is still unknown as local leaders await state funding news.

Director Robin Trotter reported at Thursday’s monthly meeting that a fiscal year 2012 budget recommendation by Gov. Nathan Deal consolidates and transfers the Georgia Family Connection (GaFCP) appropriation from the Department of Human Services (DHS) to the Governor’s Office for Children and Families (GOCF).

If the governor’s recommendation goes through, Trotter will lose her job as Family Connection director and the programs offered by Family Connections will also go away.

The proposal from the governor is for the $8.1 million for family connection programs to be transferred to GOCF in FY12, Trotter reported.

The state will spend more money to serve fewer children and families if they de-fund Family Connection, Trotter said.

At last month’s Banks County Family Connection meeting, Trotter passed out some information from Georgia Family Connection in response to the FY12 budget recommendations. On Thursday, Trotter urged members to contact their local representatives in support of keeping Family Connection in all 159 counties in the state instead of the proposal to serve only 25 counties in FY12.

Trotter advised members on Thursday that even if the FY12 state budget recommendation is approved the annual school supply event would be picked up by the Banks County Community Resource Association.
