When qualifying ended Wednesday afternoon in Maysville, Lula and Alto, races had been set for the mayor’s position and several council seats.
MAYSVILLE
In Maysville, former mayor Richard Presley, council member Lynn Villyard and political newcomer Donna Chesonis had qualified. Incumbent Jerry Baker did not qualify.
Races were also set in Maysville for three of the four council seats on the ballot. Those who had qualified were:
Ward I: incumbent Clay Dorsey, Joel Hammond and Kathleen Bush.
Ward II: Clyde (Junior) Hardy and Jerry C. Parr. Villyard currently holds this position.
Ward IV: Ricky Akins and former council member Scott Harper. Incumbent Stephen Lewis did not qualify.
In Ward III, Charlie Howington was the only one to qualify. This position is currently vacant.
LULA
In the Lula, two candidates qualified for the post 1 seat, incumbent Larry Shuler and Veneda Simonelli.
In the other two council seats up for grabs in Lula, only one person qualified. In Post 4, Norman Harrop was the only candidate to qualify. Incumbent Judah Echols did not qualify. In Post 5, incumbent Lamb Griffin was the only one to qualify.
In Gillsville, the incumbents Todd Dale, Post 3, and Keith Segars, Post 4, were the only ones to qualify. No one qualified in Post 5, which is currently held by Richard Ferguson.
ALTO
In Alto, incumbent Audrey Turner and John Closs have qualified so far for mayor. Qualifying ends at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, at the Habersham County Probate Office in Clarkesville.
Others who have qualified so far include: incumbent Loretta Bosco, Post 2; and Carolyn Cape, Post 4. No one has qualified so far for posts 1 and 5.
BALDWIN
In Baldwin, Dustin Mealor, for Post 1, is the only one who has qualified so far. Qualifying will end at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, at the Office of Elections & Registration, Habersham County Courthouse, 3rd Floor, 555 Monroe Street, Clarkesville.
Qualifying is also open for council Post 2, recently vacated by Sandi Rudeseal, and council Post 3, currently held by Rodney King.
The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 8 city elections is Tuesday, Oct. 11.
