A divided Homer City Council approved rezoning its former and now vacant firehouse for commercial use as a small warehouse/distribution facility.
The council’s 3-2 vote at the April 10 meeting in favor of Pest Control Insulation’s request followed a public hearing on reclassifying 963 Historic Homer Highway from institutional to restricted industrial.
The council’s nod during its regular meeting last week went against the planning and zoning board’s recommendation that the request be denied.
The approval also cleared the way for a rental contract to be negotiated between the business and Homer’s downtown development authority. Mayor Doug Cheek will help negotiate the terms before council reviews the final agreement as early as next month.

I stand in awe. A business wants to open in Homer. What a concept, how will the powers that be handle this request? Yep, you're right, bickering and options to deny. And I read Doug asks do the city council want tax dollars to go out of Homer and to a different city? Doug, you're a moron, TAXES LEAVE YOUR TOWN EVERY DAY FOR COMMERCE, CORNELIA, GAINESVILLE, ATHENS, LULA, EVEN MAYSVILLE!! And you're business is to good even for the town you're mayor of!! Where do citizens get glasses? Electronics? Movies? A sandwich after 12 noon? Where do they buy film? Where do they get produce? Your city council would do well to simply start at the hardware store and bulldoze until you get to the high school. It would be a 100% improvement to the status quo. And the statement of sewer, shows the city stupidity, just were is the sewer other than septic? Homer is run by morons.

You really do have an attitude problem!! If you hate Homer so much, then give it up. You are really stupid to call Doug Cheek a moron. I'll bet anything -- that HE COULD BUY YOU!!

Glad you can read Disgusted, I just wonder where his money will come from, certainly not Radio Shack, certainly not the salary for Mayor but by all means, be at Certus Banks 2pm Friday cause I'm certainly looking for any way out of the Dead town.

I can also read between the lines, you are a bitter and jealous person. No one is mayor for the salary. As far as his business, I'll bet that you don't own a business (or much of anything else). I don't know what you mean when you mouthed about Certus BankS. Made no sense, but as for leaving town, That road goes North, South, East, and West. BYE!!
