The Banks County Relay for Life will be held June 8-9 on the square in downtown Homer.
Relay for Life is an overnight team event that raises awareness of cancer in the community and raises funds to fight cancer. Throughout Relay For Life, teams of friends, neighbors, families and co-workers commit to keeping at least one member walking the track.
The survivor registration and hospitality area will be open from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday. The opening ceremony will be at 7 p.m., and the cancer survivor’s victory lap will be at 7:15 p.m. The luminaria ceremony will begin at 9:30 p.m.
“The Remembrance Ceremony is the soul of Relay For Life,” organizers state. “At dusk, we quietly remember those whose lives have been touched by cancer. In the soft glow of the candlelight, we reflect on the courage and strength of all who are affected by cancer. You can help fight cancer and honor loved ones who have had cancer, by joining the luminaria ceremony at the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Banks County.”
During the luminaria ceremony, candles are placed in luminaria bags, which are dedicated in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a loved one lost from cancer.
“When lit, hundreds of luminaria will brighten the way for Relay For Life walkers throughout the night,” organizers state. “We will also have a dedicated area for caregiver luminaria to thank and honor those who have given so m
