Sheriff Carlton Speed is warning citizens of a possible paving scam being conducted in the Banks County and Franklin County area.
On October 30, it was reported that in the area of Harden Bridge Road, a group of white males with dark hair representing S & S Paving Company approached an elderly resident at their home in reference to paving a small area of their driveway with left over asphalt for an affordable fee. Once the work was completed, the owner of the business presented the elderly resident with a much higher fee after altering what was originally agreed upon by confusing the homeowner. The men were also able to enter the residence and observe what was inside the household by insisting the homeowner provide them with something to drink.
On November 5, Banks County was advised by Franklin County dispatch that a similar incident had occurred in the Brown Road area of the Franklin County and Stephens County line.
The vehicle that the men are described to be occupying is a burgundy pickup truck with S & S Paving printed on the sides. If these individuals are seen, Sheriff Speed requests citizens to contact Banks County Sheriff’s Office at 706-677-2248.
“I strongly urge citizens to have a written contract in hand before agreeing to any type of business with an unknown individual,” states Sheriff Speed. “These types of scammers prey on intimidation as a sales tactic. Be leery of anyone who goes door to door and offers services. Trustworthy contractors will not pressure you to make a quick decision and will provide a written estimate that will be valid for days or weeks. It should specify in detail the work to be performed and the total price.”
Speed continues, “Also be cautious if the company is from out county or out of state. Be sure to check out the truck the representative travels in. Even if the representative claims to have a local phone number, scammers can effortlessly purchase disposable cell phones to provide a local number in the area they are soliciting. Also, don’t be afraid to ask to see their driver’s license or some type of identification.”
