Homer Mayor Doug Cheek was charged with DUI Wednesday, Aug. 13, in Franklin County. Cheek, who was charged by the Georgia State Patrol, was also cited for headlight violation. He was booked into the Franklin County Jail.
Oh get off it. Who hasn't had a drink while not on work
hours. You know they say those in glass houses shouldn't
cast stones. If this is on your own time???? Some people just don't have nothing better to do than grind others in the ground
when they are down instead of helping them up!!!
Besides look at all the positive that has been done since
he has took office. He does do his job, that is saying
alot. Look at some who doesn't and gets all the praise!!!
All in all he really is a good person!!!
The problem is that he made the choice to drink and drive! I am thankful he got stopped & arrested before there was a tragic accident. If this is the type of decision he makes you should worry about the ones he makes as the Mayor of your town!

"Good people" break the law all the time. DUI laws are there to protect the innocent as much as punish the guilty. If you ever lost a loved one to a drunk driver, you may not be so forgiving. What kind of example does this set for our younger banks county residents? The children should have elected officials they can look up to as ALWAYS doing the right thing, not just on the clock. If my young son thinks it is okay to drink and drive if you are not caught -because our mayor can do it, then our mayor is a bad example for my child. Not even the mayor should be above the law. Maybe he isn't a drunk, but he definatley showed poor judgement on "his time".

Do not for get Doug is the most giving and forgiving person i know. Everyone makes mistakes. I have known him for over 30 year was younger then doug and he always help me make good decisions in my life. If people could look at your life like GOD can would you

Doug has done a great Job. what he does off the clock is no ones busness. I do agree he or no one else should drink and drive but this does not make them bad people.
I have known Doug all my life. He has done more for the City of Homer than any other mayor has. Look at how much this town has grown. Give him credit for what he has done. Everyone makes mistakes. NO ONE IS PERFECT.
He's innocent until he's proven guilty. Getting arrested isn't great, but you have no idea about the stop or what happened or the judgment of the officer who pulled him over. As an elected official, it would be better, however, to be above any suspicion of wrongdoing.
Okay, all of you bloggers: I don't know the man, maybe he's a good guy, maybe not. The irrefutable fact is that no one, no John Doe down the road, no George W Bush, no mayor in between, should drink alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car. Period.
So, make excuses if you wish, doesn't change the fact that he is wrong. And if he didn't want people commenting on his life, he shouldn't have chosen to pursue a career in public service.
Maybe Doug is just following the example set by George W. Bush. Maybe he wants to run for president of the United States and become a born again Christian. Then again maybe not.
The issue isn't whether or not he does a good job for Banks County. The issue is he made a choice to break the law by drinking and driving.Why should he be treated any differently ,just because he is Major? He had no regard for his life or anyone elses when he chose to drink and drive. Is this the first time he has drove drunk ? Or the first time he was caught? Major or not ,he needs to take responsibility for his actions.He could have killed others and himself. We need to thank the officer that pulled him over and booked him. That officer saved lives.I am sure the officer much rather pull over a D.U.I. driver and book him, than work a fatality "accident" caused by drunk driver.

I worked for Doug for over seven years. He is a good guy and a better Mayor. Doesnt matter what he does on his own time, should not effect his job of being the mayor of homer. I am sure some of you might have a drink or two when having dinner or when going out for dinner. He was a bad choice on his part to drive after having a few drinks, but that was his choice and noone elses. Get over it... Some of the people that live in homer think they are better than anyone else because they know this person and that person, but let me tell you guys something. No one is any better than anyone else in this town. Most of you are back stabbers anyway. Always wanna talk about someone behind there back and kick a person when they are down, but hey, that is homer for ya. And to MR. JOHN SMITH.... you should have never brought his kids into this. His kids are grown and they are there own person, him and cindi did a wonderful job rasing those kids, what they do know that they are grown, they have no control of. Alcohol is a legal beverage. There is nothing evil about it if it is used correctly. Jesus drank wine and turned water into wine. Drinking and driving is illegal. If Doug did this he will be punished. This has nothing to do with his job as Mayor of Homer. If you think his lack of judgement in his personal life affects his professional life vote for someone else for Mayor next time. Please leave his children, wives, preachers, etc. out of this argument.
our school board members you can see them out at I-85 eating and drinking who's driving them home. these are the people that our seeing after our children. so get off the mayor he's not doing anything that a lot of other people in homer are doing he just got caught. way to go cindi, doug is a great person better then some of the other elected people they just have got caught YET!

Everyone is so worried about what Doug is doing and they should be worried about what they are doing someone was taking about the kids looking at what he did and would think that it was okay to do as he did well let me tell you something i have to teenagers of my own and if my two teens went out and got arrested for drinking and driving I could not say that was Doug's fought because teen will be teens, as a teenager at one time I myself I've drink a few beers but I have told my teens not to drink and drive but that don't mean they will. Everyone that is commenting on this needs to get a life and leave our dear friend and the best mayor that we have ever had ALONE. Doug this is from your friends and we want you to know that you will have our vote if you run again and I will get out and help you in community as well so hold your head up high Doug and keep praying for you will be okay .
I know that we all make mistakes, as we are all human, but, Doug is our "Mayor". He is supposed to be a pillar of this community and is supposed to be setting an example not only for the kids but for the adults as well. What he does on his own time IS his business until it effects the people who look up to him as a leader of this town. First - please don't write in caps as it is aggravating to read. We get the point. Second, Doug is not that generous in his "givings" believe me - I know. I have had several opportunities to request donations for community affairs as well as town issues. Third - keep God and Homer United Methodist out of this - neither put Cheek behind the wheel. Gonna play - Gotta pay. Life. We all have been given free choice.
I choose to stay anonymous because I do not wish to hurt anyone's feelings by the second comment made. I volunteer alot and I know 8 times out of 10 Cheek isn't coming off the hip.
I have had the pleasure of knowing Doug Cheek for almost 10 years and I have also had the privlege of meeting and getting to know his wonderful family. Never once in all these years have I ever seen Doug do anything intentionally wrong, either in his family life or in his businesses. This is an unfortunate incident and I am positive that Doug feels far more worse then those of us doing the posting. He is innocent until proven guilty and we should let the court do its job. There is no also no doubt that the city of Homer is much better off since he became mayor and that is reinforced by many of the comments here. Hang in there Doug, you have tons of support and I have no doubt you will be much stronger person after this passes. Thanks for all you have done for me and all the rest of the people that have come to know you.
I was reading the top stories of the news and saw this story. First of all if your going to drink then you should not drive. Your not only putting yourself at risk but your also putting the lives of other innocent drivers and their families at risk. You would not understand unless you lost a loved one in an accident where they were killed by a DRUNK DRIVER. I must say this is why we have laws and he is no different than anyone else. Yes he is the mayor, what if it was a State Patrol that was arrested for DUI I bet you people would change your views then. This has been going on for years it just finally caught up with him. I do not care who you are if your going to drive drunk you should be punished. Don't put another person or families at risk for your stupidness!!

As one who lives in the public eye, I can empathize with Doug. Everything you do, especially when you screw up, is picked over and put onto the gossip chain.
Doug is a good man, a good mayor, and a great businessman who made a bad error in judgement and decided to get behinnd the wheel of a car after he had been drinking. Now, please leave him, AND ESPECIALLY HIS FAMILY, alone.
If Doug Cheek had his Radio Shack in Homer instead of Royston he would not have to drive and wouldn't have been arrested. I guess Homer is good enough for him to be a make shift mayor but not good enough for his business.

I'm a friend of Doug and his family, and also I also shop a his business just want to let you know that I'm glad he's not at the Homer Tiny Town where all the peole that think they are better than anyone else he's out doing his job the night that he got arrested he was not on Banks Co. time, I also know that the egg hunt has been in banks co for a long time but what has that got to do with Doug, I used to take my children to the egg hunt that your talking about but never again and when my children have kids I will make sure that my grandchildren don't attend that egg hunt because I don't want my family to be involed with anyone that trashes peoples name one day something could happen to you and the shoes would be on the other feet are maybe you are one who could pay your way out of things, but Doug was a man he didn't try to pay his way out you know alot of that does go on in this county it's who you are and who you know I hope Doug comes out of this on top because I will vote for him and I will get out and help him when its time for him to run for mayor it he decide to run again. You want to talk so much about how great "Ole Buck" was and you want to point fingers at someone's children.... lets just take a look at "Ole Buck's" family. I personally know that there is a nice look alcohol shack located on Mr. Buck's old home place. There are NUMEROUS CHILDREN who are served drinks and LEAVE that location. I also know from driving around Homer that this same family has been pulled over for Lord only knows what. Would you like to discuss how they are still driving?

What kind of example is this for our Youth in Homer? This is the reason we have a Ghost Out at the high school every year. To try and keep people from drinking and driven.

Doug needs to resign. When you are in a public office you represent that office and what it stands for. Yes everyone makes mistakes, and he will be forgiven, but he needs to step down from reprenting Homer. What kind of example is he setting for these young people? The mayor is a very political position - it is not like he is only representing his Radio Shack store. While he maybe a great person - that doesn't change the fact that he broke the law and was ARRESTED. Right is right and wrong is wrong. We cannot make exceptions because he is the mayor - that will set the whole system up for lawsuits. The rules cannot be changed in the middle of the game because you are loosing.
For all of you that say "many have done this and just haven't gotten caught" many are not the Mayor of Homer. That office is to be repected. You are held accountable for your actions.

1. Fact: Drinking and driving is not only ILLEGAL, it is also DANGEROUS. Consuming alcohol alters a person's state of mind and slows his or her reflexes. Sadly, many people are killed each year by drunk drivers! It is sickening to think that innocent lives are lost and the blood is on the hands of someone who made the CHOICE to operate a vehicle while intoxicated. Gasoline and Alcohol do not make a good mixture, I do not think anyone can argue with that. It's too bad that there are not harsher punishments for those who drink and drive. Shame on anyone who has ever made the choice to consume any amount of alcohol and then get behind the wheel of an automobile.
2. I am not here to argue Doug Cheek's effectiveness as mayor of Homer. However, running for and being elected to a public office automatically puts your personal life in the spotlight. If you do not want your life in the lime light, stay out of public office, as a result you will be out of the public's eye. If you want to lead a quiet life, do not commit crimes and get your name in the newspaper for having been arrested. I am unsure of what decisions have been made by Doug Cheek while he has been mayor of Homer, but I doubt that any of the construction/ renovations have been done single handedly and at his own expense. I doubt his wallet is hurting as a result...just the taxpayers' wallets.
3. How about a Homer mayor who isn't a Garrison or a Cheek??? How about public officials who do not have these families in their back pockets and do not care to offend the two families??? What if these families, their children, and their children's friends were treated the same way by public officials as the rest of Banks County's citizens??? That would be almost too good to be true.
5. Also, for those who are commenting and do not know the basic fundamental rules of English, sentences should begin with a capital letter and have proper punctuation at the end. A complete sentence should include a noun and a verb. Please use the spell check in Microsoft Word and stop doing your part to make Banks County look ignorant; afterall, we have public officials to handle that for us!

I personally think the only thing that is IGNORANT about this situation is dragging people who are not involved in this problem into the public eye. Just a little advice… instead of posting garbage about a family, KNOW YOUR FACTS. There are plenty of members of the “Garrison family” that obey the law, maintain the standards in place for entire community of Banks County, and respect the citizens and their families. You should know that one bad gene does not make an entire family bad. I do not know your identity, but I can promise that you obviously do not know this entire family. I would love to take the time to show you the “good” side of this family!

Let’s put all of the dirty laundry and gossip aside and focus on the main issue of Mr. Cheek being an elected public official who was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. This is illegal and unmoral. Mr. Cheek needs to set an example for the city of Homer and the entire county. I will pray for Mr. Cheek and his family during this time.

Well..to my knowledge, the Mayor did get a ticket, served 6 hours in jail, and will have to pay fines just like everyone else. He did not, in anyway, use his political status as a way to get himself a "get out of jail free" card, unlike many other people in his position have done or would have done. As for his family, I see that they have done nothing wrong. Therefore, why even bring them into the picture? In any instance, I do not believe that this issue is one that the people of Homer should be this concerned about. I believe that there are many more important issues in this community, state, and the world that we should be focused on. Also, if we have so much time as to sit at the computer all day and gossip back and forth about other people's lives, maybe we should consider volunteering some of our spare time to a local charity. I wish I had never even heard about this website. I think that the newspaper should reevaluate this idea and get rid of this gossip site. The only thing that this is good for is causing tension in the community and hurting people's feelings.

I have property in the county and try to keep up with things happening in Banks County. I have had many conversations with Mr. Cheek and find him to be a great representative for the city and county. Everyone makes mistakes and this DUI does not change my opinion of him one bit. I feel like everyone can make mistakes and it does not affect his duties as a mayor. I hope he runs again for Mayor and gets elected again! Go Doug! Keep up the good work for the city!
