After suffering a disappointing setback to Union County two days earlier, the Banks County High School softball team returned to the field determined to get back on track against Fannin County.
The end result was a 6-2 victory against the visiting Lady Rebels as Jordan Rogers went the distance in earning the win. Rogers allowed just one earned run and did not give up any walks.
A four-run fifth inning gave the Lady Leopards a 6-2 cushion. The inning was capped by a two-out, two-RBI single from Madison Porter.
“We played pretty well,” said BCHS coach Josh Lord. “It was good to see us bounce back from a tough loss at Union County. Fannin’s pitcher throws a pretty good drop but we had a good approach in place from working in practice the day before.”
Brittany Cook had a big day at the plate with three hits including a double, run scored and RBI. Kim Thomas, who played first base, also had three hits and drove in a run.
Porter finished the day with two singles and drove in two runs. Madison Franklin added a single and scored two runs while Hayley Baird had a single and scored a run. Ashley Denton had an RBI and Courtney Entrekin scored a run in the victory.
In the game against Union County, BCHS suffered a 7-5 defeat. The Lady Leopards held a 5-1 lead going into the sixth inning.
“This one really stung,” Lord said. “We had the game in hand for the first five inning. Union is a sound offensive team and they starting finding some holds scoring six runs in the sixth inning. We battled to get the tying run in scoring position in the seventh inning. It was an exciting game, but a tough one not to win.”
Cook, Denton and Baird all had two hits for BCHS. Cook also had two RBI and a double. Laura Rose Pickens also delivered a double while Porter had a single and an RBI. The Lady Leopards are scheduled to host North Oconee County today (Thursday) at 5:55 p.m.
