It’s a few weeks into a new year now so most people have already made and broken their new year’s resolution.
I’ve never made resolutions but this year I did decide to make one change because of my health issues. While it really wasn’t a resolution, it didn’t take me long to break it.
My goal for the new year was to eat healthier. Not a diet because those are too stressful. I don’t like the stress of words like resolutions and diets.
Instead, I decided to make it a goal (not a resolution) to eat healthier (not diet). I knew I should eat less fat because of my liver problems so I thought eating healthier was a good change to make.
It started out great. My mother was my biggest cheerleader. She bagged up fruit for me and sent me off with them telling me they would be a great snack.
Mom had healthy options picked out at any restaurant I might want to go to. She started cooking healthier at home.
I didn’t have any excuses not to eat healthy. Mom was handing me bags of healthy foods and making sure none of those sweet treats she is known for were around.
It was going great until the cheese danish. It really wasn’t my fault. I was just being polite. It all started when I got a craving for a coffee drink from one of my favorite places to go for a little afternoon drink.
I knew how much fat those coffee drinks have in them. So, I did a little Internet research and found plenty of healthy options.
I drove through and ordered a skinny vanilla latte, which by the way, is really good. I didn’t even think about ordering a snack to go along with the drink.
I drive up to the window and the young guy quickly says, “Do you want a free cheese danish.” I didn’t want to say no. There had obviously been some mix-up with an order before me and he had this lovely pastry right in front of my eyes. It had even been warmed up. Who can refuse that?
I nodded a yes, took it and tossed it over to my mother. She hadn’t heard him offer the cheese danish and asked what it was. When I told her what it was, her eyes got big and she said, “You ordered a cheese danish!” Of course, she didn’t mind sharing it with me!
I am still eating healthier. That was the only little slip-up so far. Although, I’m sure there will be others.
