A request from Homer Baptist Church for a zoning change to locate a day care center on its property was discussed by the city council Tuesday night but no action was taken because the issue was advertised incorrectly.
The proposed zoning change will be re-advertised and on the agenda for the Homer City Council meeting set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14, at city hall. The Homer Planning Commission earlier recommended that the zoning of the property remain R-1.
The church is asking that .865 acres at 246 Oak Street be rezoned from R-1 to CB (community business).
At the city council meeting this week, Rhonda Thomas, who serves as director of the preschool the church has operated for the past year, spoke on the need for a day care center in Homer.
“This is truly a need in the community,” Thomas said. “We’re willing to do whatever it takes…I get calls every day about wanting a day care and wanting more hours. It will help the community.”
In other planning business, Danny Mason, vice chairman of the town planning committee, stated the committee would like for the council to consider making changes to the sub-division ordinance to require cul-de-sacs to be bigger. There are concerns that the current requirements are too small for fire and emergency medical vehicles to turn around in.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business at the meeting Tuesday night, the city council:
•heard a request from Tim Harper, on behalf of the festival committee, that the city split the cost of making electrical improvements needed at the festival. Harper agreed to get the cost for doing this and report back to the council.
•approved Kayla Garrison to serve on the Homer Downtown Development Authority.
•approved a bid from M & P Grading for $64,750 for site work at the fire building.
•discussed the repair of a street light at Hidden Lakes and 45 mph speed limit signs that were placed on McCoy Bridge Road. Dangerous intersection signs have been ordered for McCoy Bridge Road.
away to make a decent living so I have a right to comment.
Homer was dead then and is dead now. It's people with
this attitude that causes this dead town to stay dead.
People who never left this paradise, have the idea that
convience is the beer mart.
Have you rented a movie lately? Got a perscription filled
after dark? Had a film developed? Enjoyed a meal after
4:00 pm? No, one must drive 15 miles round trip from
Homer to do these things but let gasoline get $4.00 a
gallon again and see if minimum wage will be convient.
By the way, it seems, one of the very and I DO MEAN VERY
few business left in downtown Homer has CLOSED!!
And people are fighting a day care. Heaven, what idiots!
