Polls open on Tuesday, July 20, for the primary election for the Banks County Board of Commissioners Post 1 and Post 3, Board of Education Post 5, Baldwin city council and State Senate District 50, as well as other races. In the last political forum before voting, the Banks County Chamber of Commerce hosted a question and answer session on Thursday at the county annex building. Attending the forum were candidates for BOC and BOE posts. Each candidate was asked questions by Tara Fulcher, Chamber of Commerce director, then the floor was opened to questions from the public.

The BOC candidates all said they want to pull in business to the county and are for more open meetings with more community involvement. [Full Story »] 

It was a changing of the guard Thursday night, as a new mayor and council member, as well as a returning council member, were sworn in. Jerry Neace was sworn in as mayor to replace Mike Kelley. New council member Jeff Parrish was sworn in to replace Ray Holcomb. Robert Bohannon was sworn in to serve another term. [Full Story »] 

It has been six years since the Banks County class of 2003 graduated and for some, what was a hobby then has become much more now.

Other Side of Homer (O.S.H.), a local band that specializes in an acoustic southern rock style, started forming 10 years ago when Rusty Cheek and David McWhorter began playing music together.

Since that time and the start and dissolving of several bands and a stint in the Air Force by McWhorter, the addition of lead guitarist Zach Shirley brought about the creation of O.S.H. in Jan. 2009. [Full Story »] 

The City of Homer approved a $457,000 budget at its Sept. 9 meeting, which is up over last year’s budget of $427,100.

The 2009 budget, water concerns, sewer issues and downtown development were all part of the discussion during a Maysville City Council retreat. The council held the retreat at Unicoi State Park in Helen Saturday.

Maysville residents came out to a public meeting, Monday night, to discuss the future of the town.

Adam Hazell of Georgia Mountain RDC, was on hand to discuss with the residents plans that need to be incorporated into the city's comprehensive plan.

Another meeting to further discuss and receive resident input is being scheduled.

The City of Homer celebrated the Fourth of July with fireworks.

Approximately 200 people were present for a ceremony Thursday morning in Lula for the unveiling of the Pfc. Johnathon Millican Lula Post Office. Also at the ceremony, the posthumous Silver Star was presented to Millican’s mother, Mary Lykens, and his sisters.
