A $14,600 deposit is missing from the Banks County Tax Commissioner’s office and the matter is under investigation by the sheriff’s office. Sheriff Charles Chapman said on Monday that Tax Commissioner Margaret Ausburn filed a report with his office on November 5 about the missing deposit.

Banks Countians will go to the polls Tuesday to cast their choice for president, as well as decide on state races and local issues. With one month of early voting held for the first time ever, a record number of voters — almost 2,000 — have already cast a ballot.

Bank robbery suspect captured Thursday

Officials arrested a South Carolina man Thursday afternoon about a half hour after the armed robbery of the Banks Crossing branch of Northeast Georgia Bank following a chase that began in Commerce and ended in the median of U.S. 441 a few hundred yards from the Athens-Clarke County line.

BOC approves new hotel for Banks Crossing

A new hotel is coming to Banks Crossing. The Banks County Board of Commissioners approved an application from Premier Hotel Group, Inc. for a conditional use for a four-story hotel. The hotel will be off of Frontage Road, formerly the site of RJ T-bones.

Countians continue to plan for flu outbreak

A group of Banks Countians continue to plan how the county would handle a pandemic flu outbreak. Several Banks County business owners attended a meeting on Monday to discuss how their business would deal with a flu pandemic outbreak. The meeting was hosted by the Banks County Chamber of Commerce. Chamber director Tara Fulcher said this is the first of many meetings to help the Banks County business community prepare for a flu pandemic outbreak.

Some BCN papers delayed in postal system

Some copies of The Banks County News were delayed in delivery this week after they became "lost" in the U.S. Postal System. Some readers in Homer and Gillsville did not receive copies due to the problem. Postal officials are searching for the missing bundles and promise to deliver them as soon as they are located.

Vehicle break-ins have become a big problem in the Banks Crossing area over the past couple of months, according to Banks County Sheriff Charles Chapman. Chapman spoke at the monthly meeting of the Banks County Convention and Visitors Bureau on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
