The City of Homer approved a $457,000 budget at its Sept. 9 meeting, which is up over last year’s budget of $427,100.

A Banks County High School senior died Tuesday evening after being seriously injured in a wreck Sunday night on Old Hwy. 441.

Tyler Bush, 17, Commerce, was a passenger in a Jeep when he accidentally fell out of it. Bush fell onto the road from the vehicle while it was traveling 30 to 35 miles per hour.

Bush was taken by LifeFlight to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Funding cut for new DFACS building

The Banks County Department of Family and Children Services officials have been waiting patiently for funding for a new headquarters for years. That wait will have to continue as county officials learned last week proposed funding has been cut for a new facility. Banks County chairman Gene Hart said Governor Sonny Perdue eliminated funds from the state budget for all counties seeking new DFACS facilities.

Banks County High School’s 2008 SAT scores dropped from the previous year by 70 points but school system officials are asking for a recalculation on the basis of what they believe to be errors in how the average was compiled.

Sen. Chambliss visits county

United States Senator Saxby Chambliss visited Banks County Saturday to give citizens a legislative update.
Chambliss has been traveling across the state during August to meet with citizens. He was at the Holiday Inn Express at Banks Crossing Saturday afternoon.

Banks County courts relocated

All court offices located in the Banks County courthouse have been moved to a new location while the facility is renovated.
All of the Banks County court offices, including Superior Court, clerk of court, Magistrate Court, Probate Court and the District Attorney's office, have relocated their offices to the old county elementary school, located at 335 Evans Street, Homer.

Commissioners approve budget for new fiscal year

The Banks County Board of Commissioners made it official last week concerning the budget for the new fiscal year.
After holding the required public hearings, the BOC approved a budget of $14,567,734 in a special called meeting Thursday afternoon. There was no discussion on the matter.

Homer mayor charged with DUI

Homer Mayor Doug Cheek was charged with DUI Wednesday, Aug. 13, in Franklin County. Cheek, who was charged by the Georgia State Patrol, was also cited for headlight violation. He was booked into the Franklin County Jail.
