Banks County voters will have plenty on their political plates in 2010 between county, state and national elections.

The primary election is set for Tuesday, July 20. If a run-off is necessary it will be held on Tuesday, August 10. The general election will be held on November 2, with a run-off, if necessary, set for November 30.

Qualifying for the July primary runs from April 26 at 9 a.m. to April 30 at noon. Persons elected will take office effective January 1, 2011. [Full Story »] 

Baldwin council rejects request to maintain streets

The Baldwin City Council rejected a request Monday to take over some subdivision streets.

Council member Jeff Parrish made a motion that the city accept all subdivision streets in the city that are not maintained by the county or the state. The motion died for lack of a second.

Several residents of Mallard Pond and Chandler Run subdivisions have attended the monthly council meetings for the past two-and-one-half months to ask the city to take over the streets in their subdivisions. Parrish is a resident of Mallard Pond. [Full Story »]

Schools to be closed Wednesday

Snow began falling across Banks County early Tuesday morning leading to schools and government offices closing. Schools were also closed for Wednesday, March 3, due to the weather.
Roads reported as being covered with snow on Tuesday include Hwy. 164, Hwy. 323, Hwy. 51 South between John Morris Road and Lula, John Morris Road and Old Cornelia Hwy. There have been several reports of vehicles off the road due to the conditions. Public safety officials advise countians not to travel unless absolutely necessary.
The National Weather Service reports that snow will continue to fall across the area through midnight with temperatures in the mid to low 20s through the night causing a concern for freezing roads.

Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in Athens and officers with the Banks County Sheriff’s Office arrested former Banks County Deputy Tax Commissioner Lori Ann Slaton, age 41, of Homer, on Friday charging her with seven felony counts of computer fraud and one felony count of violation of oath of public officer. Ron Gardiner will serve as chairman of the Banks County Board of Edcuation this year. In a 4-1 vote, the board approved Gardiner as chairman for 2010 and Neal Brown as vice-chairman.

Snowfall hit Banks County Friday afternoon with low temps in the area throughout the weekend. The snow fell from around 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in parts of the county, bringing several inches of snow to the area. A number of wrecks were reported Friday afternoon and during the night around the county.

More budget cuts approved: BOC approves $12.5 million budget

The Banks County Board of Commission continues to chip away at its budget shortfall by making cuts. The commissioners approved an amendment Tuesday night reducing the budget from $13.4 million to $12.5 million. The difference reflects $900,000 in additional cuts. [Full Story »]

More than six months after beginning the new fiscal year on July 1, the Banks County Board of Commissioners has finally approved a preliminary budget and millage rate. Final action on the budget and millage rate will be taken at a meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at the Courthouse Annex at 150 Hudson Ridge, Homer.
