The Baldwin City Council is proposing a 10 percent reduction in the fiscal year 2009-10 budget. The proposed FY 2009-10 budget totals $1.5 million compared to $1.7 million in FY 2008-09.

Banks County is facing a $2.2 million deficit in its FY2010 budget, leaving county leaders with three bad choices: Raise taxes, make major spending cuts, or use up all the county’s reserves.

A rezoning request to allow a trucking transportation facility to locate in Banks County hit a road block Tuesday night after the planning commission recommended denial. The Banks County Board of Commissioners will take action on the request when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the annex.

Banks woman dies in Friday fire

A 61-year-old Banks County woman reportedly died in a fire early Friday morning.

Sharolyn Griffin appears to have died of smoke inhalation at a mobile home fire on Harley Drive, in the Hollingsworth area of Banks County.

The body has been taken to the state crime lab for autopsy.

Members of the newly-formed public safety advisory board asked interim fire chief Jeff Taylor Tuesday to compile a list of things he believes would improve services. Taylor will present this “wish list” to the committee at its next meeting on 9:30 a.m. on May 19 at the annex building.
