A work crew clearing land leased by a hunting club on Hwy. 59 found suspected marijuana. The Banks County Sheriff’s Office was called in and a large amount of marijuana was found growing at the site.
On Tuesday, deputies from the sheriff’s office were called to the land which is leased by a hunting club. No one was on the property when the deputies arrived.

County coroner dies; Fire trucks lead funeral procession through Homer

A long line of fire trucks and other emergency service vehicles from across North Georgia drove through Homer Tuesday afternoon in a funeral procession for Banks County coroner Henry Galloway. Galloway, 47, died after an extended illness. He was serving his second term as county coroner and had served on the Homer Fire Department for 32 years. [Full Story »] 

Burglary reported at Lula store

The Banks County Sheriff’s Office responded to a burglary call early Friday morning at Lula Country Store, Highway 51 South, Lula. According to the report, a white male threw two large blocks of wood through the front door to gain entry into the store. Once inside, the offender stole 17 packs of cigarettes. Video cameras inside the store captured the break in on tape.

Theft among incidents reported

The Banks County Sheriff’s Office responded to a theft by taking report at an Edwards Road, Commerce, residence on Thursday. A neighbor to this residence reported seeing someone take a 10-week-old Boxer Bulldog puppy from this location.

Baldwin Police Officer Michael Kay, 51, Cornelia, died Thursday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Kay was diagnosed with cancer in May of this year.

Banks County Sheriff Charles Chapman said several calls came in to the Banks County Sheriff’s Office around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, reporting that a black bear had been struck by a car on Interstate 85.
