The City of Lula’s 37th Annual Lula Railroad Days are Friday and Saturday.

The festivities will kick off Friday night from 7-10 p.m. at the depot stage with music and dance, featuring the Steve Dyer Band.

Festivities on Saturday begin at 9 a.m. with the opening of local arts, crafts and food vendor booths at the Lula Train Yard.
The annual Railroad Days Parade begins at 10 a.m. The parade will travel the length of the old historic downtown railroad tracks with a variety of floats and unique entries, leaders state.

Entertainment at the depot stage begins after the parade and stage performances will run throughout the day featuring singers, dancers, local bands – Bluegrass, country rock and gospel – including the national recording artist Steve Bryson Band.

“This is a wonderful family event offering great entertainment, unique arts and crafts and a fantastic food selection with a local flare,” leaders state. “So make plans to join in all the festivities and fun for all.”

The Lula City Council is expected to approve the qualifying fees at its Thursday meeting for candidates seeking election to the city council. [Full Story »]

Lula residents once again dodge paying property taxes in the approved 2010-11 city budget. The Lula City Council approved the budget Monday night despite dissent from one of the council members. District 3 councilmember Mordecai Wilson voted against the $638,000 budget because he wanted to see a three to four percent raise for city employees included for appreciation of their hard work. The City of Lula will hold a dedication of a memorial for World War II veteran Captain Denver Truelove, who was also a member of the “Doolittle’s Raiders” attack on Japan, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13. [Full Story »] 

Banks County voters will have plenty on their political plates in 2010 between county, state and national elections.

The primary election is set for Tuesday, July 20. If a run-off is necessary it will be held on Tuesday, August 10. The general election will be held on November 2, with a run-off, if necessary, set for November 30.

Qualifying for the July primary runs from April 26 at 9 a.m. to April 30 at noon. Persons elected will take office effective January 1, 2011. [Full Story »] 

Another sewage spill has been reported in the City of Lula. On Wednesday, May 11, the City of Lula reported a raw sewage spill at the McLeod at Hood Street Pump Station location. City officials estimated 1,600 gallons of raw sewage was spilled.
