The Lula City Council unanimously approved a motion at a called meeting on Tuesday to proceed with applying for a Georgia Environmental Facilities Association (GEFA) stimulus package totaling $3.5 million to fund the city’s new wastewater treatment plant.
Lula ended its fiscal year June 30, 2008 in the black, according to a recently released town audit. But the effects of a struggling economy could be seen in the town’s shortfall in sales taxes and service charges.
The City of Lula took in less money than anticipated in the year, but it also cut spending to finish the fiscal year $86,000 in the black in its general fund.
The Lula City Council held meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 9 and 10, to continue work on the city's proposed zoning ordinances. City leaders are working to establish ordinances to deal with new development in the city. [Full Story »]
Investigators from the Hall County Sheriff's Office have arrested two adults and three juveniles in connection with a string of burglaries, entering automobiles and graffiti in downtown Lula. [Full Story »]
City manager Dennis Bergin said the sewage spill was on Cater Street 200 feet west and Athens Street 200 feet north at a manhole.
The preliminary estimate of volume discharged in a minor tributary of Hagen’s Creek is 3,280 gallons. The initial review of the transmission line shows that an unknown object caused the back-up at the manhole, Bergin said.
City work crews have corrected the blockage and continue to monitor the flow conditions for performance and are monitoring the environmental conditions surrounding the site.

Approximately 200 people were present for a ceremony Thursday morning in Lula for the unveiling of the Pfc. Johnathon Millican Lula Post Office. Also at the ceremony, the posthumous Silver Star was presented to Millican’s mother, Mary Lykens, and his sisters. [Full Story »]
