Baldwin mayor to veto council action

Baldwin mayor Jerry Neace is opposed to action by the Baldwin City Council Monday night to allow the police chief to drive his vehicle 36 miles to and from work and the mayor said he plans to veto the action.

At the end of Monday’s meeting, Mayor Neace told the council that he would be sending something in writing to the city clerk in the next three days to veto the motion taken on the resolution of a waiver for police chief Daren Osborn.

“We are in a tough budget time and we are furloughing employees,” Neace said. [Full Story »] 

Baldwin has new animal control officer

The City of Baldwin now has an animal control officer. City Administrator Jerry Presley reported at last week’s council meeting that city employee Kevin Haynes recently completed training in Nashville, Tenn., to become a certified animal control officer. [Full Story »] 

Harden wins in landslide vote

State Rep. Michael Harden was re-elected to serve a second term Tuesday taking 74 percent of the vote over challenger Chris Irvin.
District-wide, Harden had 9,212 votes, while Irvin had 3,249. In Banks County, Harden had 3,617 votes, while Irvin had 790.

BOC settles with JTS Trucking, Inc.

The Banks County Board of Commissioners approved a settlement in a pending litigation case during a called meeting Friday morning.

The BOC met in closed session during the called meeting on Friday to discuss the possible litigation by John Seigler of JTS Trucking Inc. The commissioners met for 15 minutes in closed session with Randall Frost, the county attorney.

When the meeting was reopened to the public, Frost recommended that the BOC grant him the power to sign off on the consent order and the BOC to issue the permit for a conditional use to Seigler and JTS Trucking Inc. to operate with the following conditions: [Full Story »] 

Hearing on alleged election violations postponed

A hearing scheduled Wednesday afternoon on a lawsuit filed by six Banks County residents over election violations that they believe occurred was postponed after their attorney filed a motion asking that the case be transferred to federal court in Gainesville. [Full Story »] 

Bennett appointed to development authority

Jonathan Bennett has been named to serve on the Banks County Development Authority. The Banks County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the appointment of Bennett at its meeting Tuesday night. Bennett, a Baldwin resident, will serve out the unexpired term of Stan Stewart, who resigned in August. The term will expire on Feb. 28, 2012. [Full Story »] 

BOE millage rate unchanged for 2010-11

In a unanimous vote at the called meeting of the Banks County Board of Education on Thursday, Oct. 7, the board approved the 2010-2011 millage rate of 13.244 mills. This is the same millage rate as the previous year. [Full Story »]
