Banks County Holiday Festival coming up this weekend

The 36th annual Banks County Holiday Festival will be held Friday-Sunday, Aug. 29-31, in downtown Homer.
The theme of the festival will be “Celebrating Banks County’s 150 years.”

Sen. Chambliss visits county

United States Senator Saxby Chambliss visited Banks County Saturday to give citizens a legislative update.
Chambliss has been traveling across the state during August to meet with citizens. He was at the Holiday Inn Express at Banks Crossing Saturday afternoon.

Banks County courts relocated

All court offices located in the Banks County courthouse have been moved to a new location while the facility is renovated.
All of the Banks County court offices, including Superior Court, clerk of court, Magistrate Court, Probate Court and the District Attorney's office, have relocated their offices to the old county elementary school, located at 335 Evans Street, Homer.

Homer mayor charged with DUI

Homer Mayor Doug Cheek was charged with DUI Wednesday, Aug. 13, in Franklin County. Cheek, who was charged by the Georgia State Patrol, was also cited for headlight violation. He was booked into the Franklin County Jail.

Smith wins District Attorney contest

Brad Smith will be the new District Attorney of the Piedmont Judicial Circuit. Although Donna Sikes carried Banks County, Smith took Jackson and Barrow counties to win the post. In Banks County, the results were: Donna Sikes 637, Brad Smith 490 For more details, see this week's Banks County News.

BCHS student dies in accident Saturday

A Banks County High School junior died as a result of injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident on Hwy. 441 Saturday evening, just north of the county sheriff’s office.

Cody Gowder, a member of the school’s football team, died after the pickup he was driving crashed and flipped several times on Hwy. 441 shortly before 9 p.m. The vehicle struck a guardrail, according to reports from the Georgia State Patrol which investigated the accident. [Full Story »] 

Three of four Banks schools make AYP

Each of the schools in the Banks County school made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) in all categories with the exception of the high school which missed on the graduation rate which currently is at 60 percent in two areas, the overall subgroup and the economically disadvantaged subgroup.
